Extending the life of your solid bamboo decking

Choosing solid bamboo decking means choosing a material that is warm, durable and eco-friendly all at once. At ootouch, we design decking boards that blend naturally into your outdoor space and stand the test of time. But like any noble material, bamboo deserves proper maintenance to preserve its beauty and guarantee optimal longevity. With spring on its way, discover how to maintain your decking and extend its lifespan, season after season.

Essential maintenance to preserve the original appearance

Over time, bamboo exposed to the elements naturally tends to develop a patina. Its original tone gradually gives way to a progressive greying, comparable to that of wood. This phenomenon is purely aesthetic: the structural quality of the material remains intact. Some appreciate this natural ageing, while others prefer to maintain the shine of bamboo as on the first day.

In any case, a minimum of maintenance is essential. It not only preserves the original appearance, but also protects your decking against external attacks: dirt, stagnant moisture, UV rays, moss or fungi.

Cleaning your decking twice a year

The first step in maintenance is regularly cleaning your decking. Simple cleaning, twice a year, is generally sufficient: once in spring to prepare for the fine season, and again in autumn, before the arrival of prolonged humidity.

The process is simple: start by carefully sweeping the surface to remove plant debris, dead leaves or dust. Then clean with a mild soap for outdoor wood such as Woca Exterior Wood Cleaner diluted in lukewarm water, leave to act for a few minutes, then scrub the surface in the direction of the fibres using a scrubbing broom or a single-disc machine. Finally, rinse thoroughly with clean water and leave to dry for 24 hours.

If you use a high-pressure cleaner, be sure to choose the lowest pressure setting and keep a certain distance so as not to damage the bamboo fibres.

Applying a protective treatment to preserve the tone

If you wish to preserve the warm colour of bamboo and protect it against UV rays and weather, it is advisable to apply a protective oil once or twice a year. The oil nourishes the material, revives its natural tone and creates a barrier against water and sunlight.

Before any application, the decking must be clean and perfectly dry. The oil is applied in a thin layer with a brush or Woca applicator, in the direction of the fibres.

If the bamboo does not look saturated, repeat the treatment. Within 5 minutes of application, remove the excess with a cotton cloth (not microfibre). For neutral protection, choose Woca Exterior Oil Natural.

You can also restore the colour with Woca Exterior Oil Teak (for Ceylon) or Walnut (for Espresso)

Repairing minor imperfections

Even when well maintained, decking can sometimes show slight defects: grease stains, scratches, splinters or superficial mould. These small marks are easily reversible.

A grease stain can be removed with a mild degreaser. Splinters can be lightly sanded.

Over time, small cracks may appear. This is part of the normal ageing of any type of outdoor wooden decking. This effect will be slowed down with regular maintenance.

Good practices right from the installation of your decking

Good maintenance starts from the moment the decking is installed. Installation in accordance with technical recommendations reduces the risk of premature wear or water stagnation.

It is important to leave sufficient space between the boards to ensure good ventilation. The drainage slope must be at least 1 to 2% to promote natural water drainage.

Provide sufficient ventilation beneath the structure.

Finally, the supporting structure must be stable, well drained, and installed on a levelled ground.

Our 5 key tips for preparing your bamboo decking in spring

1. Do a thorough clean at the end of winter. The winter months often leave traces: dead leaves, dust, moss or stains. A good sweep, followed by a clean with mild soap, immediately restores the shine to your boards.

2. Apply a protective oil after cleaning. After cleaning, remember to protect your decking. If your decking has lost some of its original tone, this is the time to revive its colour with Woca Exterior Oil. Wait for a few consecutive dry days, apply the oil to a clean and dry surface, and let the magic happen.

3. Check the general condition of the structure. Take advantage of the cleaning to inspect the decking: a loose screw, a slightly cracked board, an area where water pools? All small details that are easy to correct before the fine weather arrives.

4. Clear shaded or damp areas. Move pots, planters or furniture that have stayed in place all winter to let the bamboo breathe. Ventilation prevents stains and promotes even drying.

5. Anticipate the fine season. It is also a good time to arrange your outdoor space, redefine shaded areas, add a pergola, or think about accessories that enhance your decking: outdoor rug, soft lighting, cushions...
